Unirii Square, like Avram Iancu Square, is one of the old and central squares of Cluj Napoca, loaded with history and culture. The square has been renovated and a more generous pedestrian space has been created.
Over time, the square has borne several names. The original name of the square was Piata Mare (while the old city centre was Piata Mica). From 1869 it officially became the Main Square. It was Piata Regele Matei at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Piata Unirii in the interwar period.
In recent years, Unirii Square has been considered as the zero point of youth meetings in the city, because at the Matei Corvin monument, behind the statue “at the horse’s tail”, as this place is still called, young people from Cluj Napoca meet whether it is day or night.
